Cognitive Processing Therapy
Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is one of the best-supported treatments for PTSD. It works by looking closely at how one is making meaning of past traumatic events and also how one is thinking about themselves, others, and the world. Trauma often has a significant impact on our sense of safety, trust, need for control, self-esteem, and willingness to form close connections with others. CPT carefully examines each of these topics and gives individuals a powerful set of skills for overriding habitual patterns of thinking that aren’t working well. CPT consists of twelve, 60-minute sessions and is particularly helpful for addressing self-blame, guilt, shame, and prolonged grief. Although CPT is designed specifically to address the negative effects of trauma, its tools are useful for addressing a variety of issues and day-to-day stress. More information about CPT can be found on the National Center for PTSD’s website.
