Imagery Rehearsal Therapy for Nightmare Resolution
Nightmares are one of the most distressing and stubborn symptoms of PTSD. They also occur outside the context of trauma. Nightmares disrupt sleep and can make individuals nervous about the night ahead. IRT for nightmare resolution (also known as nightmare rescripting) is a unique approach that involves changing one’s nightmare “script” in a fantastical, dreamlike way and rehearsing visualizations of the re-scripted dream. Research shows that doing this helps reduce the frequency and intensity of nightmares. Therapy is typically brief (5 to 8 sixty-minute sessions). More information about IRT and the steps involved can be found here.
