Prolonged Exposure (PE)
Prolonged Exposure (PE) is one of the best-supported treatments for PTSD. It has been widely used for multiple decades and is a powerful way to reduce negative reactions to trauma. PE typically consists of 8-15 ninety-minute sessions and is designed to help individuals confront fears and expand their comfort zone. Many trauma survivors live in fear of their own memory, putting an exhausting amount of effort into distracting and avoiding feelings that they have about past traumas. This intense, grueling avoidance often leads to problems like addiction, isolation, and “workaholism.” Moreover, trauma survivors often struggle with public areas, crowds, and situations that remind them of past events. In PE, you will work with your therapist to build a road map for gradually and systematically facing down these fears and taking away the power that trauma memories have over you. More information about PE is available on the National Center for PTSD’s website.
